The current situation on Earth is dire. Enormous Megalodon land sharks with four legs each are coming out of the ocean and attacking humanity. Anyone with Powers has been drafted in to help, so far to no avail. Will The Griffin’s return be the success story in this endeavour? Or will he stir up so much ill-will from his previous time on Earth that his presence will be detrimental to the team?
I thoroughly enjoyed this playful sequel to Wistful Ascending, but I missed the sentient space station and some of the characters we got to know in the first book, and felt that their lack wasn’t quite made up for by the new additional characters. Having said that it was really nice to get to know Rohan’s mother and his ex-girlfriend and to discover more of his origin story.
There also seemed to be a lot more repetitive fighting which was the part that least appealed to me in the first book, and those parts were my least favourite again.
I enjoyed the witty banter between the Griffin and the other characters and the main bad guy was perfectly evil. But it felt a little bit like we had wandered into the MCU. There is even a character who is a parody of the Hulk, called the Green. If you like the MCU and want more of the same, then this story will definitely appeal. I preferred Book 1, where Rohan was one of a kind, although it was probably more rewarding for him to be part of a team and to see his old home and the loved ones he had left behind on Earth.
New species were introduced along with the mega land sharks. There was an ancient dinosaur woman named Lyst, who was able to captain a ship (as in boat not spaceship) between any bodies of water in the universe(s). I thought that was a very cool idea and there were once again plenty of other imaginative plot devices, too.
“Living dinosaur wizards weren’t the sort of people you could just hug.”
Rohan’s positivity and very likeable personality is my favourite thing about this series, along with the sentient spaceships and I greatly enjoyed his redemption arc. I look forward to seeing what is in store for him in the third book, Blood Reunion!
I received a digital copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review. Thank you very much! My opinions are my own.
