I really struggled with this book for a number of reasons. The first being the lack of world building. All we seem to get is that the city is surrounded by huge walls and a massive square in the middle where meetings are held. Apart from that there isn't much to work with which made it hard to imagine what it really looked like. The Characters were a bit flat and bland if that makes sense. We follow two sisters, Arilliah and Rabreah who couldn't be more different. Arilliah loves how things are run by the Hulcondans despite them continuously abusing their powers physically, mentally and sexually and that's mainly towards young girls. Despite witnessing this behaviour towards her sister, she still obeys the guards. I just couldn't relate to her in the slightest. Rabreah cannot stand how things are run and naturally pursues a life with a rebel group. You would think that would give her some freedom from the sexual harassment from the guards. Nope. The rebel leader sexually assaults her as a way of defeating her weaknesses. That's another thing i really Struggled with, the amount of rapes and sexual assaults towards women.
