Huge fan of LaValle after reading 'The Ballad of Black Tom' and have been waiting for Destroyer to be released. The only thing that sucks is that I have to wait for each consecutive volume to release.
The original creation is back to obliterate humanity while the last descendant of the Frankenstein family is dealing with the loss of her son. Police shootings, whale wars, utter destruction at the hands of a monster, and the science of re-animation. Can life get better? I submit that it cannot.
The story shows just how inhumane humans have become over the decades as the creation is being "brought up to snuff" as the saying goes. 225 years is a long time since the monster was last seen and it there is no reason given as to why it is back. There is also the real struggle of a mom coming to grips with the loss of her son. Dialogue is few and far between, especially since the monster has absolutely none, but we are given a slight glimpse into the past of the family and how we arrived at where we are. Since this is the first issue of 6, I am sure our characters will be a little more fleshed out as this is just a glimpse into the full story.
Props to Dietrich Smith for the illustrations. They are dark, gritty and full of color.
