If Monty Python made a space opera movie, it would be The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.

Adams definitely takes an insane plot line and goes no holds bar on a fantastically silly story about a man who is taken from Earth seconds before it is demolished and launched into a journey through space, along with some ridiculous humanoid creatures and a severely depressed robot. The most ridiculous part of the story is that it is almost believable yet completely mad. The writing, except for the ridiculous made-up terms, is very simplistic and easy to follow along and the novel is chock-full of humor.

I suggest you listen to the audiobook narrated by Stephen Fry because it doesn't get more British than that. You can also watch the motion picture, by the same name, starring Martin Freeman, Thomas Lennon, Alan Rickman, John Malkovich, Richard Griffiths, and Mos Def, just to name a few. Either way, it is pretty short as the audiobook is only around 5 hours and the movie is only 1 hour and 49 minutes.
