Welcome to! Can you tell us a few things about yourself?

I'm a paramedic and former Marine with a history degree. I am happily married to my wife of 23 years, with whom I have one son and two cats, who she swears are mine despite the fact that the cats look nothing like me. I've been writing fantasy and sf for a long time, and have a number of books published.

What book did you enter SPFBO with, and is it your debut?

"Broken Crossroads" is my entry for this year. It's my third novel.  "Out of Nowhere," which was my entry last year, reaching the finals and finishing 8th overall, was my debut and my second book is military sf, so not really a good fit for this contest.

Tell us a few things about it. What should the Judge you'll be allocated to, expect from it?

"Broken Crossroads" is a story of a thief and a former mercenary and their adventures in the crumbling remains of a once mighty city. It's a pulpy adventure in the vein of Leiber's "Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser" stories. There are acrobatics and swordfights and chases over rooftops and glittering jewels and monstrous guardians and cunning traps.  It's an homage to the older fantasy that I loved growing up.

You'll compete against 299 other books. Do you believe your book will stand out against the competition, and if yes, why?

I do. I think I write well, I think my characters and dialogue will stand apart, and I think that with the state of the world right now, a lighter, fast paced, swashbuckling escapist fantasy tale is what people need. I get my Grimdark and dystopia fix from the news now.

I'll never tell. I've destroyed the map and the secret dies with me. Now let the girl go.

Editor’s Note: Don’t be a hero, LeClerc.

Why did you decide to enter SPFBO in the first place?

Seriously, though, I'm grateful for the experience of last year, and I want another shot. I think this book is a better fit.

Are you working on a book right now? What should we expect from you next?

I'm dipping my toes in steampunk, just to try it. I'm working on an airship adventure story right now. My dystopian near future sf I had been working on just seemed too optimistic after Trump and Brexit

Anything else you would like to add? A message to the other contestants, the Judges, or Mark Lawrence himself?

Hello. My name is Patrick LeClerc. You killed my father. Prepare to die.

Joking aside, I want to thank everyone for the effort they put into this contest. It provides a great opportunity for self published authors.

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

What do you mean? African or European?

Editor’s Note: This is a man on a mission, if we’ve ever seen one. If all the judges that gave Out of Nowhere a lower score last year start disappearing in puffs of smoke, you know who to blame, dear reader. Me, your gracious host? I scored that one a 7.0 out of 10 – should be safe! Phew.

On a serious note, we at wish you the best of luck this year, Patrick! I am looking forward to learning more about Broken Crossroads.
