"There's always a bit of truth in each rumour, the trouble is finding out which bit."

The Novice is the second book in the Black Magician Trilogy and, like the first, it was an enjoyable read, presenting our protagonists with a whole new set of difficulties to overcome as they are placed in completely different settings.

The Novice starts a while after the ending of book one in the series, with an additional point of view. Three of the four Points-Of-View take place in the Magician's Guild, which trains the nobility of the land in the art of magic. If the nobility pass the tests and trials they are allowed to qualify as a magician. The storyline that took place in this location was interesting and pleasurable to read.

The other Point-Of-View in The Novice was sent on a journey to different countries in an attempt to uncover information about an ancient and forbidden magic. It sounds great but personally I found this portion of the story to be at a slower paced and it did not grab my attention as much as the POV's at the Magician's Guild.

I continued to enjoy the prose of Trudi Canavan which is descriptive but not to an overly complex extent. This resulted in a vivid presentation of the Guild and relayed the magical aspect of the world which plays a prominent role within the first two of this series, and I imagine it will continue onto the last. It heightened my experience as a reader because I always love being able to imagine and picture the world I am reading about, as I believe most of us do.

The characters were once again well written and I thoroughly enjoyed the dynamics between them, presented cleverly through the Guild's social hierarchy, which is a key aspect of life among the novices and masters at the Guild.

Overall The Novice was an entertaining read that has ensured that I will continue onto the finale of the series. My only quibble was the pacing of a brief part of the novel, and even that served its purpose in furthering the plot.

I look forward to discovering the events that will unfold on these characters and hope that it will be a satisfying conclusion.
