Interview with SPFBO Author Stephanie Burgis

Welcome to! Can you tell us a few things about yourself?

I write wildly romantic historical fantasies for adults and fun, funny MG fantasy novels for kids. I grew up in East Lansing, Michigan, but I live in Wales nowadays, surrounded by castles and coffee shops, with my husband (fellow writer Patrick Samphire), our two kids, and our very vocal tabby cat, Pebbles.

What book did you enter SPFBO with, and is it your debut?

Snowspelled. It's not my debut, but it was the first book in a new series of romantic fantasies for adults.

Editor's Note: The cover art of Snowspelled is absolutely stunning!

Tell us a few things about it. What should the Judge you'll be allocated to, expect from it?

It's a frothy, fun, feminist romantic short fantasy novel set in an alternate version of Regency England. In this timeline, Boudicca successfully kicked out the Romans many centuries ago (with the help of her second husband, a mage), so ever since then, it's been taken for granted that the hard-headed, practical ladies of Angland manage the government while the more emotional and irrational men deal with the magecraft.

But Cassandra Harwood has a history of breaking all the social rules - and now she's found herself trapped in a snowbound houseparty with dangerous trolls, sinister elves, interfering family members and her infuriatingly attractive ex-fiance, Rajaram Wrexham, who refuses to understand that she has given him up for his own good...

Editor's Note: This sounds like some good alternate historical fantasy fiction fun!

You'll compete against 299 other books. Do you believe your book will stand out against the competition, and if yes, why?

I hope so! It mixes together the romance and fantasy elements I love with lots of humor and unique worldbuilding.

If only I could remember, we'd ALL be happier! ;)

Editor's Note: We really would, wouldn't we?

Why did you decide to enter SPFBO in the first place?

I've been wanting to enter it ever since I first heard of it!

Are you working on a book right now? What should we expect from you next?

My next book for adults (set in the same world as Snowspelled) will be Moontangled, starring an f/f couple who were side-characters in the first two books of the series. I also have an MG fantasy novel coming out from Bloomsbury Children's Books this autumn, The Princess who Flew with Dragons.

Anything else you would like to add? A message to the other contestants, the Judges, or Mark Lawrence himself?

I can't wait to read all the books I'm sure to find out about through the SPFBO this year!

What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?

Is it a European or an African swallow?

Editor's Note: Thank you for joining us today, Stephanie! We at wish you the very best of luck with Snowspelled in the competition, and plenty of success with Moontangled and with The Princess who Flew with Dragons!
