A Noble's Quest begins centuries ago with a battle of great heroes to defend the freedom of human beings in a world of elves, wizards, dwarves, halflings, gnomes, goblins and even dragons. And they lose, but not before spiriting away a mighty and powerful sword to be guarded by the elves. Jump forward to "today," and we meet our main characters, Sarentha and Thomas, two young men working as woodcutters - the best jobs peasants of their stature can get. It doesn't take long for them to get yanked away from all that by a mysterious noble and set on a grand series of adventures.
Toxopeus gives an obvious nod to The Lord of the Rings, and at times it feels a bit like Tolkien fanfic. There's plenty that's different, fresh, and fun however, and my attention rarely waned. My biggest complaint would be that I wasn't a fan of the writing style, and at times it got in the way of my enjoyment of all the great adventures and truly interesting characters and intrigue. That's me, though, and the prose might not bother you at all. I'd say check it out and judge for yourself.
It's not listed this way on Goodreads, but A Noble's Quest is book one in The Empire's Foundation series, and books two and three are already available.
