Sure! I'm a 36 year old mother of two boys, 4 and 7. My day job is a support lead at a patent law firm (that's sort of like a paralegal, except not), which is completely unrelated to my two master's degrees in ancient near eastern studies. My night job involves making up stories with lots of magic and talking to imaginary people. I live in Pennsylvania, and I enjoy reading, writing, teaching myself new dead languages, and dreaming about playing video games again.
What book did you enter SPFBO with, and is it your debut?
I entered Sweetblade, which is a stand-alone novel in The Heretic Gods world about one of the characters in my debut, Banebringer. Sweetblade is my second published novel.
Editor's Note: The first one, Banebringer, was excellent, and my favourite debut of 2018. -F.
Tell us a few things about it. What should the Judge you'll be allocated to, expect from it?
Sweetblade is a dark, emotional character story about how an average girl turned herself into cold-hearted killer to bury the pain of her past. It's not a light or whimsical story by any means!
You'll compete against 299 other books. Do you believe your book will stand out against the competition, and if yes, why?
I'm sure there will be some AMAZING books in SPFBO5 this year! I think Sweetblade will be a bit unique in that it's 100% a character story (not just "character-driven," which is all my books). It also deals with some very deep, difficult emotional issues and mental health, which is not something I see a lot of in fantasy, at least in any sort of depth.
WHERE DID YOU HIDE THE MONEY!??!?!
Google tells me it's in an envelope taped to the bottom of a kitchen shelf. I'm not so sure I'd believe Google on this point...
Editor’s Note: I don’t know, Carol, Google seems pretty trustworthy to me…
Why did you decide to enter SPFBO in the first place?
Last year, someone told me about it and I figured, why not? This year, I already knew about it and I figured, why not? But I've met a lot of really great people through SPFBO, so regardless, it's been a rewarding experience and I expect this year will be no different!
Are you working on a book right now? What should we expect from you next?
Right now, I'm working on the sequel to Banebringer, titled Cursebreaker (Book 2 of The Heretic Gods), with a planned release of Dec 2019. After that, I'll be releasing the first in a new epic fantasy series sometime in the 2nd quarter of 2020, followed by Book 3 (and final book) of the Heretic Gods Trilogy in late 2020.
Anything else you would like to add? A message to the other contestants, the Judges, or Mark Lawrence himself?
I'm really grateful to Mark for starting, organizing, and supporting this whole thing, to the judges for the crazy number of volunteer hours they put toward it, and to my fellow contestants for being awesome! I hope to get to know some more great people this year. Good luck!
What is the airspeed velocity of an unladen swallow?
3 girth units.
Editor's Note: Thanks for joining us, Carol! Here's to the best of luck with SPFBO 2019, and I am personally looking forward to reading Cursebreaker before year's end!
